Lancaster Opens

25 Nov 2022

England’s fourth University Maths School, Lancaster University School of Mathematics (LUSoM) opened in September 2022. Lancaster University School of Mathematics, run by the Rigby Education Trust, in partnership with Lancaster University and Cardinal Newman College, has welcomed its first class of students to its site in Preston. The Lancaster mission is to enable the mathematicians from all backgrounds across the Northwest to realise their potential within an inspiring, inclusive and supportive learning community.

Headteacher Peter Tiltman joined LUSoM in May 2022. Peter was Head of Maths at a Blackpool High school for several years, then Head of Sixth Form and Assistant Head Teacher at Turton School in Bolton before he joined LUSoM.

The Maths School will be a centre of excellence with a substantial outreach programme to be offered to feeder schools, with activities ranging from master classes and teacher INSET to mentoring individuals and sharing online resources.
